A nest is a type of home. It is a structure created by an animal to protect its eggs and house its young after hatching. Birds are most famous for their nests, but mice, squirrels, insects, frogs, alligators, turtles, and even fish build nests of different kinds.
Bird nests are the most familiar to backyard observers. Even these can have a great variety. Some nests look like just a pile of sticks; others are highly detailed, teardrop-shaped baskets. Many birds construct bowl-shaped nests, as pictured in this drawing guide.
Did you know? Hummingbird nests are the smallest (see easy hummingbird drawing instructions). They are held together using sticky spider webs, are less than an inch wide, and weigh only a few grams. The nest of a large eagle, by contrast, could be nearly seven feet wide and weigh over a ton!
When you see a backyard bird picking up twigs and grasses in its beak, it is most likely building a nest.

If you have a pine cone (learn to draw a pine cone) and some ribbon or string, you can be a part of the process. Wrap the string loosely around the scales of the pine cone, and use a ribbon to suspend it from a tree branch. In the spring, you may find that local birds decorate their nests with your brightly colored string!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Bird Nest
How to Draw a Great Looking Bird Nest for Kids, Beginners, and Adults - Step 1
1. Begin by sketching the rounded top of the nest. Use a series of short, curved lines that meet in jagged points. This gives the nest the texture of the grass, straw, twigs, and other materials used to build it.

2. Continue to use a series of short, curved lines that meet in jagged points. Sketch this style of line to fully enclose the rounded shape of the nest.

3. Texture the interior of the nest. Draw curves using a series of short, curved lines that meet in jagged points.

4. Draw the first egg by sketching a rounded shape. Notice that one end of the egg is narrower, while the opposite end is wider, than the other.

5. Draw the second egg. Again, make one end of the rounded shape wider than the other.

6. Draw the third egg by drawing a curved line between the first two, enclosing a rounded shape that appears to be nestled behind the others.
